CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Blake leaned back against the seat, eyeing Reese as she sipped from her straw. The place had been cleared out for a while, only a few late-comers sat in the main dining area, finishing up their food. Blake and Reese had been done for a while. Had merely been enjoying the relaxing conversation in the comfortable space. His Texan rose had revealed quite a bit about herself that night, and Blake had devoured every sweet, southern word of it. Still, he wanted to know more. Part of him had been tempted to bring up what she’d shared while at the bar – the fact that she’d never been in love. For whatever the reason, she’d seemed ashamed to admit it. Though he wasn’t sure why. Unless … unless she feared she’d never fall in love at all. How close had she gotten to men in the past, anyway?

“You about ready to go?” he asked her, opting to save it for another time.

Reese sighed contentedly. “Yeah. I had no idea what this mishmash of stuff was going to taste like with all those sauces and spices we added toward the end. But that was …” she paused, giving him a flirtatious grin, “almost heaven.”

His pulse raced in response. “Almost,” he said with a wink. He gripped hold of her hand and escorted her out of the restaurant, saying goodbye to Gan and Heesun along the way. Though inwardly all he could think about was the night before. The moments he’d spent with her in his arms. The tempting taste of her pretty mouth. He had a habit of falling too hard too fast when it came to women, and wasn’t too pleased with himself for how he’d acted while in her bed. But what choice did he have? Reese had made her desires known – scooting close to him, running her hand over his chest. He might have more willpower than some, but Blake was still a man. And boy, did that woman ever make him weak.

“I was wondering if you’d be open to talking a bit more about your brother, Gavin. The fact that you sometimes feel like it’s your fault that he left.”

Blake knew he should be focused on answering the question, but a voice in his head went in another direction. If she’d asked about Gavin, perhaps he could ask about what she’d revealed too. “Well Gavin – he never got along with my old man real well. They butted heads about all sorts of things. Gavin’s the type to always push. His brain can get going a hundred miles an hour. What new techniques were folks using out there? How could we be saving time? Making more money?” He shrugged as he accelerated through the intersection. “I was interested in that stuff too. But I always had a better grip on my dad’s limits. I knew he didn’t want to hear about it if he didn’t come up with it himself. The first few times I brought up suggestions, they were shot down without so much as a thought.
